The Last Wish Cover Conceptualization

Overview

In this project me and a group of others were given the prompt to make a completely new cover design for a pre-existing book. I chose to work on Andrzej Sapkowski's The Last Wish, which inspired the Witcher series.

Although, there was a catch. after completing the book cover design, we also had to make a unique 3D AR render that fits with the themes of the book.

Book Design Process

Inspiration

The inspiration for the cover came from all contents within the book, and what the book is actually about.

The Last Wish is a gritty collection of fairytales, so I made the style of the cover similar to those gold-embossed books.

The border of the book cover alludes to all of the chapters, and what is important in them, while front and center is the main character Geralt (usually represented by a wolf and two swords) on the path to his destiny.

There was various different design ideas before I settled on the finished product.

3D Render Process

Inspiration

When making the 3D render of he book I had to go through trial and error to keep the file bellow 5MB.

I chose to make the border of the book 3D and metallic since that was the most important aspect of the cover. Then around the book I added golden coins and a sword in the back, as well as had a slice through the center of the cover.

The Last Wish contains a lot of conflict. Evil and lesser evil, coin over morals, violence and peace, and most importantly: Destiny.

Conclusion

By the end of this project I learned and used various design elements and incorporated them into both a 3D and 2D environment using the AR modeling program of Vectary along with Photoshop and InDesign. Overall, the project took 4 weeks, in which 3 weeks were used for process of the cover design and 1 week for making the 3D model and learning how to use Vectary.

I was proud of the outcome because I learned new techniques and skills in such a short time period and learned how to navigate more 3D related realms and how to design them.
